Loose Studs :: Asher Electro Hawaiian Jr Lap Steel [7.3 lbs]

The wraparound bridge was pulling up the studs in the body due to a poor fit.  The solution was to plug the bridge stud holes and re-drill them for a nice tight fit.  The player also brought in a set of Lollar Imperial high winds to have installed.

Fylde Octavius Bouzouki [3.5 lbs] :: setup

Fylde Octavius Bouzouki [3.5 lbs] :: setup

This Irish bouzouki came in for a setup where the player was looking to experiment with string gauges.  He wanted to go heavier on the 1st and 2nd courses (each tuned unison D & A respectively).  The 3rd course was originally tuned to a D octave, but the player wanted more punch and emphasis on the fundamental (less upper harmonics / chorus) to accommodate his melodic  runs on those strings.  The octave string's nut slot was enlarged to for a bigger string so that this 3rd string course could be tuned in unison D (same larger string gauge).

I'm making this sound way more confusing than it really is ...  :)  For those that are unsure, strings are numbered from the highest pitch to the lowest, so in the photo above, right (1) to left (4).  Oh and courses are groups of strings that can be considered one "note" (or interval / chord depending on the number of strings per course).  Now I'm really confusing you, aren't I?

Sloppy Fret Level :: 1991 Gibson Lucille [9.9 lbs]

A 1991 Lucille in the shop to address some high frets, especially up high on the neck.  Someone filled the substantial gaps between the raised frets and board on a previous refret. Many of these frets look like they were laminated with a black line.  I'm guessing that they did not properly match the fret radius to the fingerboard (frets too flat) and ended up filling in the gaps with ebony dust later.

The pickup covers were removed at one point, so the player decided to have them reinstallled.  A great sounding guitar, but has some decent weight to her.  She'd be a tough one to drag out of a house fire per the legend of BB King's guitar (RIP).

100 Year Old Restoration :: Lyon & Healy Bowl Back Mandolin [1.3 lbs]

Whew! Finally finished up this ~100 year old mandolin restoration a couple weeks ago. Let's see ... neck & fingerboard reglue, missing soundhole pieces, cracked / loose top bracing, loose back ribs, new inlayed pickguard (courtesy of Dave Nichols Custom Pearl Inlay), new bridge and properly spaced new tuners (peghead had to be bunged & redrilled). A lot of hours into this little fella. Excited to drop it off to it's new owner. I went to high school with him in PA and this was his grandmother's mandolin. Always an honor to work on family heirlooms.

Until I gather everything into a single blog post, you can check out the previous progress of this project here.

Back crack repairs :: Breedlove AD25/SM

Late night clamp party on the airline damaged Breedlove. The back and sides in this area are connected again, so moving onto this back crack and loose brace. The feeler-gauge-on-a-stick was used to get glue under the brace and clamped with a brace jack inside. The suction cup helped work glue into the crack. Finally plexiglas and clamps to close and hold everything together.
