Laminate top crack :: 2012 Gibson Custom Shop ES-359

A really odd crack for a laminate top.  This top's outer maple veneer has split and lifted around the bridge pickup rout.  I cleaned out the dirt and fit a splint into the crack along with re-gluing the separated veneer.  It won't be a pretty repair, but it should keep the crack from spreading.

Gut & rewire :: Olson "Languedoc" [7.1 lbs]

This semi hollowbody clone had some funky wiring so it was gutted and re-wired.  Below is a quick tip for laying out clean hollowbody wiring. Use low tack drafting tape to copy the layout and transfer it to a piece of card stock. Drill the appropriate holes and install the components in your template to keep all of your leads nice and clean. Bonus points for cutting out the f-hole. No one wants to see wires passing through there.

2014 Gibson ES-355 :: twisted fingerboard

2014 Gibson ES-355 :: twisted fingerboard

Setting the truss rod on this year-old Gibson was a compromise that yielded excessive relief (bow) on the bass side and not enough relief (back bow) on the treble side.  Luckily there was enough fret height to allow this twist to be corrected by leveling the frets.

New frets & bone nut :: 1967 Guild Starfire IV [7.6 lbs]

Here's an all-mahogany 335-style Hoboken Guild in for new frets and unbleached bone nut.  Photos of the fretwork can be seen here and here.  This is also the guitar that I dumped kitty litter into in an attempt to take the curse off of a moldy smell.

The Melita Syncro-Sonic bridge radius needed to be adjusted to match the fingerboard's radius.  While working on the bridge I found that the foot was double-stick taped to the top.  In order to give more range to the action adjustment (and side-to-side), the tape was removed and the underside of the bridge foot was re-fit to the top in order to lower the overall height.

The exposed patches of mahogany on the body were lightly sealed with shellac and the guitar strung with Thomastik flats.  This is a great sounding guitar.  She will be missed ...
